Link building is crucial to SEO because Google use a site’s inbound links to judge how important it is.
While as a rule when it comes to links it’s a case of the more the merrier, ideally you want a mix of links including some from pages with a higher PageRank* (PR) than your own site.
There are several things to look out for when evaluating the quality of a link including:
- The link’s anchor text
- The relevancy of the page’s content
- The link count and PageRank of the donating page (and the rest of the website)
- The number and relevancy of other links on the page both internal and external
- Whether the link has had the rel=”nofollow” attribute applied (common for blog comments)
- The age of the link itself and the ages of the pages it goes from and to
- How the link and the page that it’s on are likely to mature over time

*PageRank, named after Google pioneer Larry Page is an approximate scale of a page’s importance, on a logarithmic 0-9 scale. All pages start on 0, getting a PR of 3 typically required 100 to 1000 average quality links and so it quite doable. A PR of 6 probably requires upwards of 100,000 links and so is reserved for higher profile sites. To get a PageRank of 9 or 10 you need to be a household name, like Adobe, Amazon or IBM, with a link count running into the millions.
